In 1820, a young English clergyman, Henry Lyte, was visiting a dying friend who kept repeating the phrase "Abide with me." Moved by the visit, Lyte wrote the hymn but though little about it until some 27 years later when, failing in health, he had the song published. It was not, however, until 1861 when organist William Monk added his own music to the words that the beauty of the work first became appreciated.
Abide With Me fast falls the eventide,
The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless oh, Abide With Me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day,
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see,
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
