Since December 27, 1903, Sweet Adeline, has been the all-time favorite song with barbershop quartets, composed by Henry Armstrong to words written by Richard Gerard, was sung for the first time in New York City. the title for the song was suggested to the composers when they saw the name of the great operatic soprano, Adelina Patti, on a theatre marquee.
In the second half of the 19th century Adelina Patti was arguably the most important opera star of her day. Patti was peerless. Audiences flocked to see and hear her, from St. Petersburg to San Francisco. Internationally famous authors eulogized her; critics renowned for their severity were unstinting in her praises. Even other prima donnas, members of a breed not noted for generosity to rivals, acknowledged her supremacy. Despite the phonograph being invented in the twilight of her career, history is fortunate to have captured her voice on disc. Patti still evokes the legend that is Patti, our "Sweet Adeline."
Sweet Adeline,
My Adeline,
At night, dear heart,
For you I pine;
In all my dreams
Your fair face beams,
You're the flower of my heart,
Sweet Adeline.
