Star trumpet player with the Benny Goodman band, Ziggy Elman took this traditional Hebraic song and made a smash hit of it. Benny Goodman's 1939 recording, featuring Elman on solo trumpet, and Martha Tilton on vocal, reached Numero Uno on the "Hit Parade" and held that position for 5 weeks. Recordings by Bing Crosby and by Count Basie and his band could not match Goodman's success.
