Every new generation seems susceptible to this carefree, rhythmic charmer of a song. Perhaps it's because the lyrics, though virtually a string of non sequitur words, convey the feeling of thumbing one's nose at the whole darned complicated, oppressive world. In the year 1926, composer Henderson could afford to do this. "Blackbird" was on one of five hits he had written in that year, equaling his track record of the previous year.

Pack up all my care and woe,
Here I go singing low,
Bye Bye Blackbird,
Where somebody waits for me,
Sugar's sweet, so is she,
Bye Bye Blackbird.
No one here can love and understand me,
Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me;
Make my bed and light the light,
I'll arrive late tonight,
Blackbird, Bye Bye.
