It was four years to the month (April) after Fort Sumter
was fired upon in 1861, and the south--not withstanding such early proudly won
victories such as First Manassas (First Bull Run), Front Royal, First Winchester,
Seven Pines, Port Republic--though proudly carried on, had become tired, hungry,
hurt. On April 6th, 1865, the rearguard of General Robert E. Lee's Army of
Northern Virginia was hobbling painfully toward Lynchburg. A few miles east of
Farmville at a spot called Sailor's Creek, the Union Army at full fighting strength
surrounded and attacked Lee. The Confederate soldiers dug in to fight bitterly
and well; but they were overwhelmed as volley upon volley of hot Union artillery
fire burst about them. Thousands of men, including some Generals, surrendered
in the field. This was the last battle of Lee's gallant Army of Northern Virginia.
The surrender of the Confederate South at Appomattox followed three days later.
Words and
Music by Dan Emmett.
I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land.
In Dixie Land where I was born in,
Early on one frosty mornin'
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land.
Then I wish I was in Dixie
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land, I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie;
Away, Away, Away down South in Dixie,
Away, Away, Away down South in Dixie.
