For his grand entrance as star of his own show, Little Johnny Jones, George M. Cohan got off to a prancing, flag-waving start with "Yankee Doodle Dandy," a syncopated march in two-four time ending with the strains of the original "Yankee Doodle" tune. Obviously fashioned to reflect Cohan's own personality as well as that of the character he played, the song quickly became the actor's musical trademark. Cohan may well have been a real-life newphew of his Uncle Sam, but he was not above strengthening that relationship by delaying his birthday from the third to the fourth of July.
I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy,
A Yankee Doodle, do or die;
A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam's
Born on the Fourth of July.
I've got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart,
She's my Yankee Doodle joy,
Yankee Doodle came to London, just to ride the ponies,
I am a Yankee Doodle Boy.
