Für Elise
The joy of many a piano student, the bane of many a sibling, the pride of many a parent, Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) Für Elise has long resounded in households around the world. Its simple, rolling melody falls gently under the finger tips, making it popular with neophytes and professionals alike. Scholars now believe that the inscription found on the manuscript may have been misread. The German characters for the names Elise and Therese can be mistaken for each other, and, in fact, the piece was found among the possessions of Therese von Malfatti, with whom Beethoven was in love at one time. Therefore it seems quite possible that he actually intended Für Elise Für Therese.
