Jimmy Kennedy and Hugh Williams, the British song writing team that brought us "Red Sails In The Sunset" [Click To Hear] created another American hit with their haunting lovely "Harbor Lights." First sung here by Rudy Vallee, it became one of the most popular tunes of 1937. In 1940 it received a new lease on life when it was used as theme music in the superb film version of Eugene O'Neill's play The Long Voyage Home. Who can forget John Wayne, Thomas Mitchell, Barry Fitzgerald and Ian Hunter gazing shoreward as their ship glides out into a sea churning with enemy U-boats! Words were unnecessary. The yearning melody of "Harbor Lights" was sufficient to convey the hopes and fears, the loneliness and courage of the men as they faced unknown peril and tribulation.
I saw the harbor lights,
They only told me we were parting,
The same old harbor lights
That once brought you to me.
I watch'd the harbor lights;
How could I help if tears were starting?
Goodbye to tender nights
Beside the silv'ry sea.
I longed to hold you near
and kiss you just once more,
But you were on the ship,
and I was on the shore.
Now I know lonely nights,
For all the while my heart is whisp'ring,
Some other harbor lights
Will steal your love from me.
