Singer Kate Smith was the first to introduced this ballad in 1936. Over the years, it has been recorded as a novelty song as well as a country ballad by such artists as Somethin' Smith and the Redheads, Tony Bennett, Slim Whitman, The Ink Spots and Ruth Etting. By far the most popular recording was Fats Waller's 1936 version, which held No. 1 on the charts for four weeks. Variety selected this song for its Fifty Year Hit Parade.
