The Ballad of Jesse James
|
|
|
The James brothers were in St. Joseph as guests at the home of Jesse and his family. After breakfast on the morning of April 3, 1882, the three men were planning a job in the front sitting room where Jesse slept. It was a warm morning and all the doors and windows were open. Jess took off his cartridge belt and revolvers and covered them with his coat on the bed so that people passing the house would not see him armed and become suspicious. A picture hung awry on the wall. Jesse moved a chair over and stood up on it to straighten the frame. With the bandit leader unarmed and his back turned to his visitors, Bob Ford seized the opportunity, pulled his gun and shot Jesse in the back of the head.
Jessee James was a lad who killed many a man.
He robbed the Glendale train.
He stole from the rich and he gave to the poor,
He had a hand, a heart, and a brain.
Poor Jesse had a wife to morn for his life,
Two children, they were brave;
But that dirty little coward that shot Mister Howard
has laid poor Jesse in his grave.
