Transportation songs were clogging the market during the century's first two decades, but few managed to achieve the musical mileage of the rollicking waltz, "In My Merry Oldsmobile." Inspiration was supplied by a well-publicized trip made in 1905 by two Oldsmobiles. It took them 44 days to make their way from Detroit to Portland, Oregon, thus marking the first cross-continent journey ever accomplished by automobile.

Come away with me Lucile,
In My Merry Oldsmobile,
Down the road of life we'll fly
Automobubbling, you and I.
To the church we'll swiftly steal,
Then our wedding bells will peal.
You can go as far as you like with me,
In My Merry Oldsmobile.
