The Pittsburgh-born Erroll Garner* had been playing piano
since the age of three. It was said he just sat up to a piano and began playing.
Later it was said that the piano was invented so that Erroll could compose the
immortal "Misty" on it. A deeply creative and sensitive artist, he prolific
career has spanned the riverboats on the Allegheny River to the top concert halls
of the world. Garner's incredible conceptions and remarkable two-handed swinging
attack have brought him world-renown for almost four decades. His was one of the
most original and distinctive musical voices of contemporary times. British jazz
critic, Albert MacCarthy, called Garner "...the last of the great individualists
in jazz."
The ol'Kunnel notes that
the rendition of Misty here lacks only Erroll's famous grunts and groans but is
notable anyway. (grin)
*Garner, Erroll Louis, 1921–77, American jazz pianist and composer; b. Pittsburgh. He wrote about 200 songs, including "Misty," "Dreamy," and "Solitaire." He developed a unique style of piano playing and toured throughout the world from the 1940s through the 1960s.
Best Known As: The guy who wrote the song "Misty"
A self-taught pianist who never learned to read music, Erroll Garner was nevertheless one of the most popular jazz musicians of the 1950s. His swinging piano and gift for melody kept him on the top of the charts, and his most memorable tune, "Misty" (lyrics added by Johnny Burke) was a pop hit for five different artists between 1959 and 1975.
In 1971, Garner re-recorded "Misty" for the soundtrack to Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut, Play Misty For Me.
Look at me...
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand,
I get misty just holding your hand
Walk my way...
And a thousand violins begin to play
It could be the sound of your hello
That music I hear,
I get misty the moment you're near
Can't you see that you're leading me on
And it's just what I want you to do
Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost
Thats why im following you
hoh-wohow!
On my own...
When I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my right foot from my left
My hand from my glove
I'm too misty and too much in love
yeah, wooh!
Can't you see that you're leading me on
And it's just, just what I want you to do, oh!
Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm following you
huh, yeahoh!
On my own...
When I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my left foot from my right
My hand from my glove
I'm too misty, I'm too much in love
Wooh!
I'm too misty!
Too, I'm too much in love, hoh-hoh-hoh hoh-hoh!
