Breakfast at Tiffany's is a four-star motion picture starring Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen and Mickey Rooney. It is a daffy screwball comedy romance with a stylish verve that set the standard for everyone's idea of sophistication in the sixties. It also encouraged a generation of hopeful romantics to move to Manhattan.
Although Truman Capote dismissed this film of his novella as a "mawkish valentine to Audrey Hepburn" (he had Marilyn Monroe in mind for the role), Audrey does offer a spruced-up portrait of the party girl who always got fifty dollars for the powder room. She's irresistible as Holly Golightly perfectly suggesting the frightened child inside the play girl who chases away the "Mean Reds" by high tailing it over to Tiffany's. As a comedy-romance, the film's sublime, with Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer melancholy Moon River setting the mood and George Axelrod's witty script keeping the soggy sentiment in check. It was directed by Blake Edwards for an 115 minutes of sophisticated delight.
Moon River,
Wider than a mile:
I'm crossin' you in style
Some day.
Old dream maker,
You heart breaker,
Wherever your goin',
I'm goin' your way:
Two drifters,
Off to see the world,
There's such a lot of world
To see.
We're after the same
Rainbow's end
Waitin' round the bend,
My huckleberry friend,
Moon River and me.
