Frank L. Baum's children's classic "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" had its film premiere on August 8th, 1939. The musical starred Judy Garland as Dorothy, the girl who sails "over the rainbow" in a tornado. Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr played her friends the Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman and the Cowardly Lion. The sounds (some songs were done by the Singer Midgets) and sights (the tornado was made by a woman's stocking) proved the real wizard was Hollywood. Frank Morgan played the Wizard. Margaret Hamilton was the "Wicked Witch of The West." Billie Burke was the beautiful and helpful good "Witch of the North." Just to hear "Over the Rainbow" once again makes this perennial TV favorite worth tuning into.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemondrops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemondrops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?
