It was at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom that Benny Goodman, "The King of Swing," met his match. On May 11, 1937, the Goodman band gave a stellar performance before a capacity crowd at the Ballroom, but when the "Men of Webb," formed by their leader Chick Webb, took the stage there was total pandemonium. When the night was over, the general consensus was that Chick Webb's band came out on top. Both bands recorded this timeless piece with equal success, reaching number 10 on the charts, and it could be heard in the 1956 film, "The Benny Goodman Story."
Music by Benny Goodman, Chick Webb and Edgar Sampson. Words by Andy Razaf.
Savoy, the home of sweet romance;
Savoy, it wins you at a glance;
Savoy gives happy feet a chance to dance.
Your form just like a clingin' vine;
your lips, so warm and sweet as wine;
your cheek, so soft and close to mine, divine.
How my heart is singin'
while the band is swingin'.
Never tired of rompin' and stompin'
with you at the Savoy,
What joy a perfect holiday;
Savoy, where we can glide and sway.
Savoy there let me stomp a way with you.
