It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)

How this fine gospel song got it's start, according to an urban legend.** One night while at a party, Stuart Hamblen was cornered by John Wayne who found his new-found religious zeal hard to believe. (Mr. Hamblen had been a rounder and a hard drinking man.) During his conversation with the actor, Stuart remarked off-handedly, "Well, it's no secret what God can do." As Stuart was leaving the actor's house that evening, the Duke walked up to him and told him he should write a song about the comment he had made. That chance remark led to It Is No Secret (what God can do), a tune that provided a Top 10 country hit not only for Hamblen, but also proved successful for Red Foley, with the Andrews Sisters, Jo Stafford, and Bill Kenny and the Song Spinners. Later, Elvis Presley and the Jordanaires recorded it and it became one of their best known Gospel hits. Words and Music by Stuart Hamblen

As a little background to my write up on this music page, let me first say this. I really don't know if this sequence of events is true or not. But it is a reduction of the story as I have found it never the less. There was a rendition of this that hit my email in-box that culminated in "And that's the rest of the story" a la Paul Harvey. This raised the Ol'Kunnel's eyebrow ... well, I am a bit a head of myself.
I first received the midi rendition by Frank Schober from him and decided to do a page for my jukebox. When I looked through my sheet music, I found it and the lyric. So far so good. Then, I decided to do an organ recital to add to the page. It was then that I discovered that the internet story had misspelled the Hamblen family name and the first name in the email was absolutely wrong. (My family name is so often misspelled, I have a thing about getting other family names correctly spelled.) I suspected a hoax and determined to find out more before proceeding. Click here for the Urban Legends Reference Pages for more information.
Well, I've been wrong before but I did believe that my page would be appreciated for the midi renditions and lyric even though the story was somewhat like the one about George Washington axing his father's cherry tree. (grin) In spite of this controversy, I hope you will enjoy the music and sing the song often.
-- Bob Clarke aka the Ol'Kunnel....

The chimes of time ring out the news; another day is through.
Someone slipped and fell.
Was that someone you?
You may have longed for added strength, your courage to renew.
Do not be disheartened, for I bring hope to you.
(Refrain)
IT IS NO SECRET what God can do.
What He's done for others, He'll do for you.
With arms wide open,
He'll pardon you.
IT IS NO SECRET what God can do.
There is no night, for in His light you'll never walk alone.
Always feel at home wherever you may roam.
There is no power can conquer you, while God is on your side.
Just take Him at his promise.
Don't run away and hide.
(Refrain)
