If the spirit of the twentieth century had to be conveyed
through any single aesthetic medium, there can be little doubt that the medium
would be jazz. Just as surely, if the Zeigeist of jazz were to be
represented by one composition, there could scarcely be any other contender than
W.C. Handy's St. Louis Blues.
There are few honors that the founding father of the
blues has not won, but the testimonial that will live the longest can be found
in the music and lyrics of a composition that will outlive us all.
