While Olivia de Havilland and John Lund were in the throes of filming To Each His Own--one of the four-handkerchief dramas of 1946--Ray Evans and Jay Livingston were writing a title song for the picture. Though it was never used in the film, "To Each His Own" said something special to battle-weary GIs returning from overseas. Its honest sentiment offered a welcome bit of musical philosophy for countless home comings. Eddy Howard, the crooner whose band was a favorite at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, recorded the song, and it became one of his greatest hits. The Ink Spots also made a best-selling records of it. Livingston and Evans later scored with such follow-ups as "Buttons and Bows," "Silver Bells" and "Mona Lisa."

A rose must remain with the sun and the rain,
Or it's lovely promise won't come true.
To each his own, to each his own.
And my own is you.
What good is a song
If the words just don't belong,
And a dream must be a dream for two.
No good alone,
To each his own,
For me there's you.
If a flame is to grow,
There must be a glow;
To open each door there's a key.
I need you I know; I can't let you go;
Your touch is too much to me.
Two lips must insist
On two more to be kissed,
Or they'll never know what love can do.
To each his own; I've found my own,
One and only you.
