Romeo and Juliet in New York? Yes, when
Leonard Bernstiein, Stephen Sondheim and dramatist Arthur Laurents have anyting to
do with it--and so West Side Story was born in 1957. In the process,
Shakespeare's Montagues and Capulets became feuding teen-age gangs, the Jets and
the Sharks; the "star-crossed lovers," A New York boy named Tony and a Puerto Rican
girl, Maria. And the balcony scene? It was played out--where else?--on a fire escape, with Tony and
Maria singing ecstatically of "Tonight."
Words by Stephen Sondheim.
Music by Leonard Bernstein.
Voted Number 7 of 365 tunes from a survey by
the Recording Industry Association of America
and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tonight, tonight
Won't be just any night
Tonight there will be no morning star.
Tonight, tonight,
I'll see my love tonight,
And for us, stars will stop where they are!
Today the minutes seem like hours;
The hours go so slowly,
And still the sky is light.
O moon, grow bright,
And make this endless day endless night
Tonight!
